In 2018, surrealist artist Hannah Yata stretched a canvas six feet square and filled every inch of it with a riot of living things. "In the Valley of the Moon" is an Eden, a luminous moon-mother presiding over an ecosystem in full bloom, with fish-eyed maidens, orchids, wings, and water all tangled into one breathing web. Yata paints the wildness of nature and the feminine as the same untamed force, and this is that idea at its most rapturous: paradise not as stillness, but as appetite. A painting conceived at the scale of a wall, now concentrated into a 2,000mg 24-karat golden Aurum canvas for the first time.

Ask someone to picture “a Hannah Yata” and odds are they picture this one. “In the Valley of the Moon” is the painting that crystallized her iconography — the moon-mother, the teeming Eden, the fish-eyed court — and it’s traveled accordingly, shared and re-shared until it became the shorthand for her entire world. It’s also, at its heart, a painting about luminosity: every creature in the valley is lit by one radiant body at the center, glow rendered in oil, a technique that goes back to when pigment was invented. Gold makes it real. On this edition the moon sits in actual metal, and the light in the painting behaves as it would if the painting were real — shifting, catching, alive in a way no canvas or screen can do. This is the image gold was meant to capture.

Certified authentic.
Each Aurum is double serialized, with one unique serial number on the bill, and one on the certificate of authenticity, or COA. Each COA is sequentially numbered, so you'll know which you got off the production line of our mint.
The serials on every COA are protected by FIPS-compliant holographic, tamper-evident seals. The Aurum bills have the same embedded anti-counterfeiting tech found in the Swiss franc. In short, there's never been a more protected gold collectible or art print.

About the Artist
Hannah Yata
Hannah Yata paints like the wilderness got a vote. Born in Georgia and homeschooled in the countryside, she fell into colorful oils before she was ten and never left. She earned her BFA in painting from the University of Georgia before moving to New York in 2012, where the collision of city excess and her rural instincts lit the fuse. Her giant canvases are dense, teeming ecosystems rendered at monumental scale — some stretching nine and ten feet — where fish-headed women, orchids, serpents, and storms tangle together in what she describes as layers of symbolism about how we treat the natural world, and how we treat women, and why those are the same question. A fixture of the new contemporary surrealism movement, Yata is that rare thing: a painter whose wildest images are also her arguments.
